This paper analyzed the transformation process and characteristics of Yokohama Port, paying attention to spatial characteristics and movement. The Yokohama Open Port was a space for cross-cultural exchange, where commercial trade was revitalized by foreign and Japanese merchants. However, half of the city was destroyed by the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 and World War II, and Yokohama concentrated its efforts on revitalization and regeneration. From the 1950s to the 1960s, the port function expansion and six major projects were carried out to rediscover Yokohama and reorganize the pier area as a cultural downtown strengthening project. Next, based on the historical background of Yokohama Port, six characteristics related to the correlation between port culture and urban development were derived. Although there was a coercive system by the government to accept “high-color culture” in trade and trade with foreigners at the Yokohama Open Port, the Japanese naturally accepted foreign cultures in the space for cross-cultural exchange. This was a stepping stone for Yokohama to form a modern city, especially before other cities. In addition, this modern way of thinking allowed Yokohama to stand at the center of politics, economy, and culture to the extent that it was called the port city of Yokohama, and based on this, Yokohama was able to establish an exclusive position as Minato culture. In the process of imitating Western modern thinking and architecture, Yokohama developed an international sense, and by applying this sense to the development of its own country, it grew and developed again as a port city with a Japanese-like character.
