Purpose : The purposes of this study were to develop new phonological short term and working memory pointing tasks and compare the performances of each tasks accordingto stimulus modality between children with speech sound disorder(SSD) and typically developing children(TD). Methods : Using REVT and U-TAP, 16 SSD children and 14 TD children were selected. They conducted pointing tasks of short-term and working memories by auditory and visual stimulus modalities, and digit span tasks of K-WISC-IV. The performances of each tasks were compared between two groups, and correlation analysis among the auditory pointing tasks, the visual pointing tasks and the digit span tasks were conducted. Results : First, phonological memory performances were significantly higher in TD than in SSD. Second, the pSTM scores were significantly higher than the PWM scores in both SSD and TD groups. Third, scores in the auditory stimulation task were significantly higher than those in the visual stimulation task in both groups. Forth, the test type, stimulation modality, and the group’s three-factor interaction effect were significant. Fifth, there was significant positive correlations between the new pointing tasks and the existing digit span tasks. Conclusions : It was confirmed that SSD children have lower phonological memory than TD children, and working memory is a more difficult task than short-term memory. Above all, in the auditory pSTM task, TD children show ceiling effects, while SSD children still show great difficulties. This suggests that the task that can maximize the difference between the two groups is the auditory pSTM task.
