This study was performed to evaluate the antioxidative effects on the ethanol extracts of Taraxacum mongolicum (Tm) in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to 5 groups: normal (NC), STZ-induced diabetic control (DC) and three experimental groups, diabetic rats were treated with ethanol extract of Tm (1 g/kg b.w./day : Tm-1, 2 g/kg b.w./day : Tm-2, and 3 g/kg b.w./day : Tm-3). NC and DC were fed the AIN-93 diet and the three experimental groups were additionally administered with Tm ethanol extract at doses of 1, 2, or 3 g/kg b.w./day for 14 days. Diabetes was induced in Sprague-Dawley rats with a single intravenous injection (45 mg/kg b.w.) of STZ. Significant decrease in the liver glycogen was observed in diabetic rats. There was a significant elevation in the liver malondialdehyde (MDA) in diabetic rats as compared with normal rats. Administration of Tm (2 g and 3 g/kg) significantly decreased MDA in the liver of diabetic rats. The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) was significantly decreased in Tm-2. The activities of catalase (CAT) were significantly increased in the Tm-2 and Tm-3 extract- supplemented groups than DC group. The activities of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-px) were significantly increased in the Tm-3 group. Tm extract significantly decreased glutathione reductase (GR) activity in Tm-3 compared with treatment in diabetic control rats. Tm extract significantly increased glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activity in Tm-2 and Tm-3 than DC group. In the present study, it is concluded that ethanol extract of Tm has free radical scavenging activity and improved antioxidant.
