Purpose : This study aimed to examine how infant vocalizations and parents’ responsiveness change as infants get older. Methods : Vocalization data were collected from 18 pairs of infants and parents at their home at the age of 9-11 and 12-14 months using Language ENvironment Analysis(LENA) system. Infant vocalizations were classified into non-canonical and canonical babbling. Parents" responses were classified into no-response, non-contingent response and contingent response and the contingent responses were categorized into eight types. Results : The frequency of non-canonical babbling was higher than that of canonical babbling during the observed times, but the frequency of canonical babbling increased significantly as the age increased. Parents" contingent responses significantly increased when canonical babbling increased. Among response types, the ratio of acknowledgement decreased significantly, while directive and play vocalization increased significantly. Conclusions : This study provided useful information on the early intervention by examining the relationship between parents" contingent responses and children"s speech-language development.
