Museums strive to find new opportunities to reach a broader public. Examples in this attempt to engage audience could include online learning programs as well as partnership-building with schools. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced virtually all schools to at least partly switch to online education. As school teachers now look for a range of high-quality online educational resources to support their students remotely, museums need to offer programs customized with school curriculum in response. Hence, extensive studies are necessary with focuses on different types of museum online programs as well as a new nature of museum-school relationship as it has changed with the pandemic.
Buk-Seoul Museum of Art(Buk-SeMA) as a community museum has very actively run in-person educational programs for schools before COVID-19. Responding to the pandemic, Buk-SeMA chose to move online and newly developed online learning resource for school. Among many different options in designing educational resources online, Buk-SeMA offers programs that consist of 1) educational video 2) teacher’s guide (mostly text) 3) hand-out.
This paper first examines Buk-SeMA’s online learning resource in terms of its general characteristics as content that is created and distributed online. Analysis of a content creation process from conception, production, and assessment from the curatorial perspective follows to discuss a range of curatorial issues including choice of effective digital media, presentation of art works through video, collaboration with exhibition curator and video director, communication with teachers and students. For this purpose, a set of analytical tools for online content has been borrowed from the previous research, and five programs made by Buk-SeMA have been thoroughly investigated.
The sudden transition of everyday life to online space has been a great pressure. Looking on the bright side, the crises encourages museums to show creativity and resilience by harnessing the power of online media to connect to schools. This paper aims to lay out findings and implications of the Buk-SeMA’s case, as one of most distributed online educational programs in recent years, hoping to expand understanding possibility of online media in museum-school relationship and help creating better programs in the field.
