The study started with the problem of "Why people do not ask questions." In the museum, which is a place of lifelong learning, people share different ideas and information. Dewey said that any learning lack of questions would be educationally problematic. A preliminary study shows that when an educator provides a learner with an opportunity to ask, the learner can be more interested in the subject concerned. The case study found that the conversation consisted of questions and answers could be led to self-directed learning and active participation in the program. The National Museum of Korea developed Museum Wonder Cart, an educational program for international, in November 2019. This study intends to examine how questions and converstions can lead to self-directed learning among international learners. During the global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, travel restrictions have created changes in the museum environment. In this context, the study examines whether a learner has self-directed learning through questions and converstions in the online and offline education setting. To achieve the purpose of the study, the author focused on the following questions.
First, is self-directed learning possible through the meta-cognitive questions and conversations raised during museum education?
Second, are meta-cognitive questions and Bakhtin"s Dialogism connected to effective self-directed learning in online and offline education?
Third, how do the five characteristics of Bakhtin"s metalinguistics appear in online and offline education?
According to the case study of the educational program for international in the National Museum of Korea, "conversation" was led to self-directed learning in offline education based on mutual respect and understanding. However, online education revealed some limitations in self-directed learning. It is required to design conversational learning methods tailored to online content. It is also necessary to develop digital education tools for online learning. In preparation for the post-COVID-19 era, it is necessary to redefine the concept of "conversation." A conversation is a tool to express one"s idea in response to another person"s ideas, emotions, and accents, while they meet face to face. The study found that conversation in online education required a learner to have an attitude of listening. In follow-up research, the author plans to have an in-depth analysis of the concept and methodology of conversation in online education and the formation of consensus in the multicultural setting.
