Medical information shared by doctors over social media platforms such as Facebook, Linkerdin, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter have been exponentially increasing over the last decade. Despite social media’s positive role in providing auxiliary health information, its indiscriminate accessibility makes for heightened awareness of its ethical implications and doctors’ responsibility on all shared contents.
Multiple medical professionalism guidelines are emerging at both national and specialty levels which include the American Academy of Internal Medicine and the Federation of State Medical Councils, the American Society of Surgeons, the British General Medical Council and our own Korean Medical Association social media guidelines.
To aid Korean doctors’ familiarisation and application of the ‘Doctor Social Media Usage Guidelines’ we found the need to develop educational cases based on real undesirable social media posts matching them to the guidelines for reflective education.
The goal of this study was to identify and use social media posts in violation of the recommendations of the ‘Doctors’ Social Media Usage Guidelines’ established by the Korean Medical Association that were uploaded by doctors that included cases with undesirable remarks, images and patient identifiable materials among others and adapt them into the development of an interactive educational platform.
