This article suggests the achievements and tasks of online education that National museums of Korea(NMK) has implemented in response to the social crisis in terms of education in terms of education and the direction of operation to pursue after the COVID-19 pandemic.
NMK has made various attempts to open the space to visitors and provide various opportunities such as exhibitions and education despite the gradually escalating infection crisis since the first COVID-19 confirmed case occurred in Korea in January 2020.
In particular, in the field of education, NMK has provided online learning video materials linked to school subjects and operated its own educational programs without interruption while keeping an eye on the trend of school sites that promoted normalization of public education. In addition, various educational video contents were produced and actively shared with communities outside the museum based on various specialized fields of the museum, collections, and various learning information on exhibits. In fact, this trend has not been broadened due to the outbreak and spread of COVID-19.
NMK has laid an essential foundation for changes in the museum’s operating environment and the implementation process of online education, which will be in full swing in the near future, and have continued experimental attempts. Representatively, there are the establishment of a department dedicated to digital affairs, the creation and management of immersive digital gallery and VR tour, the accumulation and exhibition of important cultural assets, the operation of museum e-learning programs, and the production of educational contents.
Using these systems and contents, the museum was able to achieve considerable educational results while stably conducting online education and equipped with facilities during the COVID-19 epidemic. On top of that, the digitization work promoted by means such as facilities and equipment, contents, experience and experience spaces, and user-learner interrelationships is expected to serve as an advantageous foundation for museums to achieve proper performance in the field of education in the future.
The museum was able to achieve considerable results in the process of operating online education. First, compared to the case of face-to-face education, learners who actively participated and communicated were found. In addition, the effect of consistent story-oriented education that can lead to learners’ concentration and response was also confirmed. Also, the effect of physical education that can relax the tension of isolated learners was also enhanced. The online format has been greatly expanded to the extent that there is no need to emphasize it separately. Another important achievement is that in the process of considering and realizing necessary online education, education staff were able to check the relative balance between educational topics and targets and improve their capabilities.
Among these educational significances, we had an important reflective task. The key point is that the advantages of online education must be established as an opportunity for everyone. Basically, in a situation where learners’ choices are strengthened, it is important to develop an educational method that can focus them online and to produce content that can fascinate them. It is also necessary to develop historical thinking skills and to prepare missions and opportunities to lead mutual relations and empathy.
Throughout a long history, museums have developed in the direction of opening up for everyone. In the reality that rapid technological development greatly affects the interdependence of relationships, efforts to strengthen the bond between people are very necessary. We should use online properly as a way to maintain a reflective network of communities so that online can cover people warmly.
