One of the immediate tasks museums facing today is recognizing the shifting needs of museums in a rapidly transforming society; museums must establish an always-on system with museum users and be open to their diverse demands. For survival in this complex social environment, museums should formulate strategies to develop potential users and analyze existing ones from diverse perspectives. As interest in museum users has increased since 2010, efforts have been made to understand how museums and their users can establish an always-on system and conduct comprehensive qualitative research on individual users.
The purpose of this study is to suggest plans to improve the reliablility of qualitative research on museum users based on field observations and user interviews conducted for a study of visitor appreciation of exhibitions at the Children"s Museum at the National Museum of Korea.
The study suggests making the following efforts to improve the reliability of qualitative research on museum users. First, researchers should carefully observe any naive realism, silent language, or defensive mechanisms arising among the researchers and/or subjects and consider if there have been any matters overlooked in the study. Second, it should be noted that interviews and observations are conducted as part of qualitative research within the special environment of a museum. It is therefore important to take note of matters for particular consideration before conducting interviews and making observations in this environment and develop appropriate methods in this regard. Third, it is necessary to find ways to test hypotheses through reliable methods and apply the proven hypotheses to subsequent research in order to compile the results of qualitative research.
The findings of reliable qualitative research in museum education should be faithfully applied in the field to develop additional research themes. It is hoped that this study will offer an opportunity to accumulate high-quality qualitative research results based on improved reliability and that such results can be applied to promote active communication between museums and their users and advance always-on systems.
