In January 2009, a gold plaque inscribed with a prayer discovered in the West Pagoda at the Mireuksa Temple site changed the atmosphere of academia, which had estimated the founder of Mireuksa Temple as King Mu and Princess Seonhwa based on the Samgungnyusa. Because It is explicitly recorded in the prayer that the queen of Baekje, who was also a daughter of Sataekjeokdeok, established the Mireuksa Temple and enshrined Sarira in the pagoda, It was expected that the problem who is a founder of Mireuksa Temple would be solved. However, as various issues related to Princess Seonhwa’s existence, such as the relationship between Baekje and Silla, and the political situation of King Mu’s reign, came to the attention of researchers, the debate on the founder of Mireuksa Temple continued to expand. In this article, I reviewed the two most important issues regarding the founder of Mireuksa Temple focusing on the existing research results. First, regarding the existence of Princess Seonhwa, I examined various views on the wives of King Mu and the reliability of historical records in Samgungnyusa. Then, I reviewed the construction process and the layout of buildings in Mireuksa Temple used as an important basis for the arguments that Mireuksa Temple was established by several founders. Through this work, I tried to make sure that although the records indicate that King Mu’s wife was the founder of Mireuksa Temple, it is unclear whether the wife mentioned in the records was Princess Seonhwa or not. And it was also confirmed that Mireuksa Temple could not be thought of separately into three areas. Therefore, it is valid to accept the mention engraved in the prayer literally that the queen of Baekje, a daughter of Sataekjeokdeok, established the temple. In addition, considering the political significance of a sarira reliquary, it was suggested that the establishment of Mireuksa Temple was a very important event that showed one side of the royal family and royal authority at that time. So deepening the research on what meaning Mireuksa Temple as a royal temple has is needed.
