This paper attempts to examine the two main characters, Christine and the Phantom, of The Phantom of the Opera from Lacanian theory of the Conscious and Unconscious. Christine’s mental world is split between the subject of the unconscious and the subject controlled by unconscious thought. However, during the story unconscious thought increasingly plays a major role in controlling Christine. Finally, Christine chooses Raoul over the Phantom who guarantees worldly security, which proves that unconscious thought governs her. The Phantom is also split between the conscious subject as false being and the subject of unconscious thought. The Phantom has been frustrated by not being able to win the Other’s recognition of his existence. Thus, he defies the Other and decides to create his own dream world. He manipulates situations to bring Christine into his dream world. However, after unexpectedly receiving passionate kisses from Christine, the Phantom turns into a good man as if by magic, and stops attacking Christine and Raoul but instead helps them to leave in safety. To sum up, both Christine and the Phantom ultimately remain as subordinate subjects to the order of the signifier; namely unconscious thought.
