The purpose of this paper is to examine Henderson’s metamorphosis in the notion of G. Deleuze. Henderson, who is the protagonist in Bellow’s Henderson the Rain King, is alienated from his society and family. He finds only chaos in his life. So, he tries to find a new life not in the civilized society but in the primal place; he leaves his family and goes to Africa. Through the various experiences in Africa, Henderson realizes what made him painful and returns to his home, America. To examine the process of his metamorphosis, the notions of Deleuzian ‘rhizome’ and ‘body without organ’ are used. Deleuze emphasizes the rhizomic process of déterritorialization, which deconstructs the molar organization that codifies rules and systems. Deleuzian notion of body without organ is also important in explaining Henderson’s metamorphosis. Henderson confronts with many events and tries to overcome his own problems, being a ‘body without organ.’ Finally he has been transformed into a nomad who loves people and society through the rhizomic process. Therefore, Deleuze’s notions are very useful to describe how a man can be changed from his mental disorder and alienation.
