This paper explores the story of Serena and Timias at the center of Book 6 of Spenser’s Faerie Queene in the light of Senecan, Lipsian and Foucaudian concepts of withdrawal and self-care, and proves that their retirement and self-care in a hermitage is an essential composition of the public and active virtue of courtesy. Seemingly incongruent with courtly courtesy, their sojourn in a pastoral space is a form of stoic withdrawal for self-care, undertaken to strengthen themselves against the troubles of anti-courtesy vices. Their withdrawal, therefore, constitutes a return to the inward seat of courtesy, the “lowly stalke” from which courtesy blooms. A stoic interpretation of the story also helps to reveal the function of courtesy as the virtue of civilized intercourse, which attempts to break the boundaries between the binary oppositions, the low and the high, the private and the public, and the country and the court.
