Edmund Spenser’s The Fairie Queene was composed in the era when a female monarch reigned and the Protestant ethics began to redefine love and marriage. This paper investigates the Elizabethan gendered sexuality in book Ⅱ and III of the epic romance. In the episode of Guyon, a knight of temperance, and Britomat, a knight of chastity, the poet shows the problem of sexual desire and chastity in different ways. In the Bower of Bliss, Guyon overcomes Acrasia’s sexual temptation in a relatively simple and violent way, and conqeauently his moral achievement and agency is not sufficiently emphasized. On the other hand, Britomat, a female knight who keeps searching for her beloved Artegall throughout the poem, shows the virtues of chastity in a more mature and less rigid way, when she rescues Amoret, a fellow woman from the male tyrant Busirane, sympathizing with the female victim’s suffering and letting him alive.
