Examined in this article is basically how the Goryeo government greeted foreign emissaries, and the objective of such examination is to determine what kind of status Goryeo had in the international community at the time. In the Goryeo period’s early half, whenever a Khitan emissary visited Goryeo and delivered the Khitan emperor’s edict to the Goryeo king, the emissary would face South and the king would face ‘West,’ at least according to records. Such odd standoff, in which one was facing south while one was facing west, showing ‘not exactly opposite’ directions, was derived from an interesting situation in which both countries had different ideas to associate with specific directions. Simply speaking, Goryeo and Khitan both interpreted the rules in a way that would empower their own respective positions, and the result was the aforementioned position of both parties. In the Goryeo king’s greeting of Sung and Chin emissaries, similar rules (employment of the rules, at least) applied.
Entering the Yuan period, the Goryeo king had to observe rules which were observed by the ‘Chinese local’ officials when they received orders from their own(Yuan) central government. In other words, Goryeo, although being a foreign country with a realm which was separate from China, was considered as part of the Yuan order, and was required to observe the Empire’s ‘domestic’ rules. Such situation continued for a rather long time, and also due to the Jeongdong Haengseong provincial government that was installed on the Korean peninsula, Goryeo’s position as an extension of the Yuan territory and part of its realm became semi-permanent, at least in terms of envoy-greeting protocols.
Later, Ming dynasty recognized Goryeo as a foreign country, but for the first time as a Chinese dynasty it dictated rules that should be observed by a foreign country’s court whenever a Ming emissary would visit it. The contents of the protocols, interestingly enough, were the same with those that were observed in ‘Ming local’ regions (when local officials received orders from the central). In other words, it was a recurrence of a certain practice that had been imposed upon Goryeo earlier by the Yuan empire. Goryeo, which came to accept its status as a vassal state after a century-long relationship with the Yuan empire, also accepted Ming’s demands and observed protocols accordingly.
