Today, the blind man Dokgyeong(독경. 讀經) is almost disappeared, but the Dokgyeong of the traditional society was practically mainly done by the blind.
This paper aims to study and introduce the blind man Dokgyeong of Gyeongbuk province in traditional society. The blind man Dokgyeong of this province has virtually disappeared today. But the researcher has occupied the local the blind man Gyeongmun-jip(경문집. a scriptures collection book) (Haeaekgilchang) Bulboyujib(해액길창(解厄吉昌) 불보유집(佛寶遺集)(1937), the video tapes of the local the blind man Dokgyeong ‘The Traditional Gyeongju Buddhist Scriptures Body’ (1995) and has interviewed six blind men of Dokgyeong in the province. These hardly make it possible.
Antaek-gyeong(안택경. 安宅經. the ceremony of well-being for household) consists of Bujeong-gyeong(부정경), Jowang-gyeong(조왕경), Sejon-gyeong(세존경), Seongju-gyeong(성주경), Josang-gyeong(조상경), Jisin-gyeong(지신경), and Sisik(시식. 施食. a supplying food for uninvited sprits). Among them, it is unique that there are Sejon-gyeong and Sejon-puli(세존풀이) that sings the biography of Buddha.
Byeong-gyeong(병경. 病經. the ceremony of curing against the disease), in the case of Okgapgyeong(옥갑경. 玉匣經). Okchugyeong(옥추경. 玉樞經) which are commonly used in other local Dokgyeongs, only partially used Okchgyeong. It also preferred to chase out evil sprits, which is the cause of illness, rather than arresting them.
Haewongyeong(해원경. 解寃經 the ceremony of praying for a dead one) begins with wearing a Buddhist hat called Yeonhwagwan(연화관), and ringing a Buddhist instrument Gyeongsoe(경쇠). In the latter part, the leader sings Korean songs such as ‘Hoesimgok(회심곡)’, while the other people sing ‘Namuamitabul(나무아미타불)’ in the chorus. The rhythm at this time was also the Buddhist Hwachung(화청) rhythm of ‘3·2·3·2’.
Other ceremonies include Dangsan-gyeong, Yongwang-gyeong, Sanwang-geong, Samsin-gyeong, Epidemic Sutra, and Chilseong-gyeong.
The blind man Dokgyeong of Gyeongbuk province have many Buddhist elements unlike other provinces Dokgyeongs known. This seems to have a certain relation to the tradition of Maengseung(맹승. the blind Buddhist monk)’ since Goryeo, who is the source of the blind man Dokgyeong in Korea.
