The history of the Korean police began with the independence of Korea from the Japanese Empire (in 1945) while the police was maintaining the order and security in the southern area of the Korean Peninsula prior to the government establishment. As the Korean Constabulary (or the National Defense Guard) was established, the police was reorganized in accordance with its original role, but it resorted to take military measures to protect democracy of South Korea from North Korea’s persistent threats.
Since the Korean War, the police as a combat power had played a crucial role in warfare by assisting the operations of Korean Armed Forces or by doing independent activities in the rear area.
During the time of political chaos from the independence to the Korean War, the police’s military capability was demonstrated by dealing with 50 cases of North Korea’s provocations among total 81 major cases. In the Korean War the police ran such military campaigns as subjugating North Korean guerilla, which led to 17,378 friendly casualties, while responding to numerous felonies. Despite these patriotic actions taken by the police, much less is known about the studies of the sacrifice and achievements of the police, thereby lacking an appropriate evaluation. Recently in 2019, however, eyes began to be on the history of the police’s participation on the Korean War through the conference hosted by the Korean National Police University that the Ministry of National Defense and its affiliated research centers participated in.
Most of the previous researches are limited to the history of the police, and its essential role in security activities, and the role of the police in the Korean War was studied comprehensively in those researches. Within the police, however, Provincial Police Agencies recently found ‘the History of the Police Fighting for the Country’ to honor the memory of those policemen in the Korean War, in which various missions and roles as the fighting police for the country are described.
Therefore, this study aims to draw an agreement to revisit the patriotism of the police by evaluating the level of its contribution to military operations in major battles that the police military participated in during the Korean War. To this end, investigated are mainly the Battle of ChosinReservoir participated by the police’s Hwarang unit, which was recently discovered, the police’s operation in the Kae-song Rail Station in the beginning of the Korean War, and the military campaigns to subjugate North Korean guerilla in the rear area that resulted in major casualties of the police. Toelevate the objectivity of this study on battle cases of the police, examined were such historical records as the previous studies, data analyzed by the police itself, history of wars studied by the police and the armed forces, and newspaper articles published during the war.
