The Guatemala Civil War lasted for 36 years from 1960 to 1996. This article focuses on how the prolonged civil war developed, especially how guerrilla groups, which were suppressed to the extent of extinction in the 1960s, were able to resume in the 1970s and 1980s.
The failure of the guerrilla activity in the 1960s was due to the incompetence of the leadership. The guerrilla groups such as MR-13 and FAR did not play their part in terms of actual combat and power expansion. PGT was also under the illusion of forming an alliance with a national bourgeoisie that does not actually exist. Guerilla groups in the 1960s did not consider the people who were living in reality as revolutionary forces because of elitism.
In the 1970s and 1980s, new guerrilla organizations were created, which differed greatly from previous ones. The ORPA put the blame for the failure of guerrilla movement in the 1960s on a foco tactic and, above all, sought to bond with the natives. The EGP also sought to unite the natives and established the concept of a ‘prolonged war of the people.’
Guatemala’s government was largely responsible for the massacre during the civil war. Conversely, this provides justification for the guerrilla movement. This article aims at examining the activities of guerrillas in detail. Guerilla groups in the 1970s and 1980s made an effort to promote close cooperative relations with the people and contributed to peace agreement and the end of the civil war.
