Guatemala is one of the countries that suffered from serious racial problems, especially those concerning the indigenous peoples, in Central America of the 20th century. Despite being successors of the splendid Mayan civilization, preserving their own language and culture, and a majority in the Guatemalan ethnic composition, indigenous peoples were treated as a thoroughly isolated and excluded ethnic group not only during establishing itself as a modern country but also even in the 20th century. This paper examines the history of the exploitation of the indigenous people and debates on the identity. According to Gramsci, to understand the political ideology and economic problems of an age, one should take a holistic view of the race and the culture when analyzing its micro-aspects. Pursuing this line of insight, this paper studies how the Guatemalan ‘organic intellectuals' such as Luis Cardoza y Aragón and Miguel Ángel Asturias figure out the identity of Guatemalan society.
