The purpose of this study was to identify the profiles based on six core competencies suggested by the 2015 Revised National Curriculum and to test students’ perceptions of different contents of competency-based classes as predictors of the competency profiles. To this end, we used the latent profile analysis using the 6th year data from Korean Educational Longitudinal Survey (KELS 2013; N = 6,263). Five latent profiles were identified based on 13 sub-types of core competencies: ‘Overall High (43%)’, ‘Overall Mid-High (44%)’, ‘Overall Middle (8%)’, ‘Overall High and Low Reading-Arts (4%)’, and ‘High Communication and Low Democratic Citizenship (1%).’ In addition, the mean differences in the perceptions of different competency-based classes across the profiles showed that, in general, there were significant differences in the perceptions of classes for self-management competency, aesthetic sensitivity competency, and community competency across the profiles. Overall, profiles with higher levels of competencies tended to report higher levels of perceptions of competency-based classes, as compared to those with lower levels of competencies. These findings suggest the crucial role of education in the development of students’ core competencies by providing the importance of the competency-based classes.
