This paper intensively analyzes two kinds of postcards of Ahn Junggeun’s photo, which are criticized for depreciating Ahn Junggeun by the Japanese. Such belittlement claims of the postcards were closely linked not only to the major media such as MBC but also to major memorial institutions including the Ahn Junggeun Memorial Museum, as well as researchers majoring in Ahn Junggeun.
The two grounds of the alleged belittlement on the photo postcards of Ahn Jungguen and the rebuttal to such claims are as follows; ① The fact that the appearance of Ahn Junggeun in the photo postcard seems emaciated. However, such a look is the authentic appearance of a prisoner, not a depreciation. ② Postcard describes the action of cutting off a ring finger like Ahn Junggeun, which is an oath of regicide, as the conventional custom of the Koreans. Yet, this is not a belittlement, rather an explanation of its own. Contrastingly, for the anti-Japanese revolutionaries and terrorists of the time, such a description could be an exaltation.
In sum, the two designated postcards of Ahn Junggeun are intended to commemorate him. Among the two postcards, the most criticized postcard, in particular, is the origin of a photo postcard displaying the remarkable international solidarity between Ahn Junggeun and Japan’s renowned anarchist Shusui Kotoku.
