Ahn Jung-geun’s “The Harbin Incident.” on October 26, 1909 is not only a historical event in East Asia, but also an important literary and artistic one. Many Chinese who lived in the same era as Ahn Jung-geun praised him, and further expressed different emotions and perceptions through various literary works and writings.
At that time, many ordinary intellectuals and students, as well as prominent Chinese politicians and writers, praised Ahn through literary works such as poetry, novels, plays, and movies. I would like to analyze poems written by Chinese people under the theme of “An Jung-geun” and “The Harbin Incident.” I think it will be of great significance in terms of literature, art, and historical culture exchange.
These poems were published actively over three periods: (1) the period of incident and martyrdom, (2) the 5.4 Movement, and (3) the Sino-Japanese War. To date, about 50 works have been collected and analyzed. Looking at the flow, it appeared the most in the (1) period, and the atmosphere continued until (2). I believe this is related to the atmosphere of anti-Japanese and revolution at that time. After slowing down for a while, it became an informative subject again due to the tense atmosphere caused by the Manchurian Incident in 1931 and the deep crisis of anti-Japanese patriotism.
Chinese poems about Ahn Jung-geun contain various perceptions and emotions. The central concept among these poems is mourning and praise, since there is a mainstream perception that he repaid the resentment of the country and the people, sacrificing himself heroically.
In summary, in the early days, the Chinese mourned and praised Ahn Jung-geun as a role model for patriotism, independence, and sacrifice, citing his repayment of Korea"s resentment. Furthermore, when China became gradually affected by the Japanese invasion and was driven to crisis, it wailed and praised him as a comrade and martyr fighting comfort in terms of sympathy and empathy with Koreans in the same situation. It is worth evaluating compared to the cold third-party perception and emotional expression that mourns and praises Hirobumi Ito, which will be discussed in the follow-up study.
