Of the many concepts found in the Quran, the proportion of “Jihad” is very large. However, simply understanding the concept of Jihad through an unprecedented and superficial preconceived notion can cause it to become a subjective and one-sided concept that lacks objectivity. In the Arabic Quran, however, Jihad is not expressed through any other word except the Arabic word “Jihad.”.
In German interpretative translations, ‘jihad‘ is translated into terms of less differences and more similarities, depending on the context of the surah(each chapter of the Koran), but its interpretations provide a broad and open interpretive potential.
In order to understand the meaning of Jihad, we must understand the words related to qitāl, which are used as concepts similar to Jihad. To gain an understanding of the complex meanings of Jihad in the entire Quran, we need to explain the words related to qitāl: ‘fight‘, ‘command’, ‘kill‘ and ‘Harb‘, etc.
The important concepts of the Qur’ān are inseparable from other related reflexes. Examining how these concepts have changed during the historical process of the Qur’ān can lead to an interesting study in the interpretation of the Qur’ān.
