In this paper, I have considered a critical study of Muslim evangelism of using the Qur’an, which has always been an issue in Muslim evangelism, and today, has specially gained a heightened interest through ‘Camel Mehtod’. Because, in this evangelism method, some important issues which can not be ignored and overlooked for pragmatic purpose, are involved. So for finding the direction of Christian’s proper attitude for using the Qur’an for the purpose of Muslim evangelism I have undertaken a critical study of the evangelism methods which use the Qur’anic ‘Isa’ as a contact point.
These methods can be classified into two types, according to the hermeneutical attitude to the Qur’an. The first one is to try to prove the Gospel in the Qur’an through the Christian Qur’anic hermeneutic of Isa. And the second is to share the Gospel based on the differences between Isa and Jesus which are discerned by interpreting the Qur’an’s Isa in terms of its own point of view, and based on the Bible. In this paper, I compared each cases of these two methods, and studied what hermeneutical attitude to the Qur’an the evangelists have taken, and how they use the Qur’anic base for the evangelism.
And I examined that the first evangelism method of the Christian Qur’anic hermeneutic of Isa has a theological, hermeneutical, and relational problems. The first theological problem is the conflict of Scriptural versus Qur’anic authority in the mind of a Christian who is converted from a Muslim background. The second theological problem is the hermeneutical error which uses some biblical texts as the basis for a Christian Qur’anic hermeneutic. The third theological problem is to overlook the Qur’anic effect which distorts Christian truth and exchanges it for a lie. By means of its worldview and its incorrect biblical statements, the Qur’an systematically suppresses biblical truth. And In relation to the hermeneutical problem, this Christian Qur’anic hermeneutic interprets the text according to the interpreter’s premise, and thus ignores the Qur’anic context and its worldview. Consequently, this causes a relational problem with Muslims because it is a misuse of the Qur’an.
These problems disproves that the proper hermeneutical attitude to the Qur’anic Isa which the evangelist should take is to interpret it in the context of the Qur’an. So for a right evangelism method using the Qur’anic Isa as contact point, I suggested sharing the Gospel, based on the differences between Isa and Jesus which are figured out from this hermeneutical attitude, and based on the Bible. Therefore in this method, Isa can not be used as a theological starting point to prove the Christian Gospel, but as a communicational starting point which enables Muslims to hear the sound testimony of the Bible.
In conclusion, this evangelism method suggests a direction for the Christian’s approach to and use of the Qur’an. That is, Qur’an cannot be a theological starting point for proving the Gospel. We should honestly interpret the Qur’an by observing the standard hermeneutical rules, and thus recognize the Qur’an’s apparent and real differences with the Bible. Our testimony should not be grounded on the Qur’an but on the Bible.
