This study investigates why it is difficult to translate meanings in the Qu’ran and also how the Arabic word kataba is interpreted and understood in the Qur’an, in order to know what to consider when translating the meanings. Kataba is a word often translated and interpreted as “to write or have written,” but it implies different meanings depending on the context in which the relevant passage has been written in the Qu’ran. Its meanings includes: To record, to transcribe (everything), to copy, to send a letter, to conclude a contract, to command, to promise, to destine, to make special, to confirm, to allow, to give and to grant. Kitāb also has several meanings, including a contract instead of a simple book, a recorded tablet, the book that records everything on judgment day, a specific book, knowledge, promise, and destiny. These meanings are also understood differently according to the interpreter. This study reveals how difficult it is to know the exact meaning of a term in the Qur’an, however simple it may seem.
