This study aims to suggest policy strategies to build safe and fun family-oriented bikeways for the city of Osan. These policy suggestions basically stem from survey results on bicycle users at the Osan railway station and the Osan River Park.
First is to meet the daily basic needs of bicycle users. Number one demand of bicycle users in Osan is convenient access to the repair shops from the Osan railway station and the Osan River Park. They also request enough bicycle parking lots close to their final destination. For this, bicycle parking lots with canopy need to be provided in the spots close to the railway stations and on the river park.
Second is to expand bikeway networks over the boundary of Osan. The most suitable way for this purpose is to connect the Osan River Park bikeway with the Dongtan Lake Park. Approximately 450m is needed to complete the circular bikeways by removing missing link.
Third is to prepare bike rest shelter in the Osan River Park. This rest shelter will play a role as a landmark and a major destination for bike users from adjacent cities. The shelter will provide shades, toilets, repair shops, benches, and a small convenient store.
The ultimate purpose of this study is to make Osan a green transportation priority city. The competitiveness of future city comes from city amenities which guarantee high quality of life. Safe and convenient pedestrian environment and bikeways are the pivotal factors to make a city livable and competitive.
