Purpose: The purpose of this article is to explore teachers’experiences about teaching-learning for the safety domain in elementary school physical education.
Method: Five participants who were experienced elementary school teachers were recruited using purposive sampling. This article details the phenomenological study that conducted in-depth interviews with each participant to understand situations caused by applying the safety domain in their 2015 national physical education curricula. Each participant was asked to engage in the in-depth interviews for forty to fifty minutes. For data analysis, a constant comparative method for inductively analyzing data was used to categorize themes. These themes connected with the research questions regarding experiences and consideration related to the teaching-learning of the safety domain.
Results: The findings of this article are as follows: First, the participants indicated their contributions and efforts for effective teaching-learning of the safety domain. Second, the participants experienced some challenges and barriers in teaching-learning of the safety domain in their physical education classes. Third, the participants pointed out different ways for improvement for more viable teaching-learning of the safety domain.
Conclusion: Elementary school teachers should be able to make efforts to create more effective teaching-learning environments by developing their content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, and pedagogical content knowledge. In addition, administrators related to the physical education curriculum should support and be interested in providing teachers with various teaching-learning materials for maximizing students’learning in terms of the safety domain.
