Royal Lecture (Gyengyeon, 經筵) was one of the political institutions, where the king listened to his eminent government officials’ lectures on Neo-Confucian classics and held discussions with them in Joseon period. Royal lectures in the King Myeongjong period also have these characteristics. This period is considered as not the ideal time for neo-confucian ideas, due to increased support for Buddhist Restoration of the queen Munjeong and politics surrounding in-law families (戚臣), but despite these, lectures themselves took place frequently, compared to the other kings of Joseon.
In the early period of King Myoengjong’s reign, Most of lectures were in the morning (朝講), where participation rate was most high, but after 1553, the middle period, senior officials were able to be exempt from day lectures (晝講) and evening lectures (夕講) making morning lectures function as administrative meeting, while making others into readings in Neo-Confucian classics. This limited lectures being management to the national administration. Textbooks used in this period’s lectures were basic Confucian scriptures and when Myeongjong grew into adult, Confucian theories, historical texts and other complex materials, such as Reflections on things at hand (近思錄) and Comprehensive Mirror for Aid in Government (資治通鑑綱目), were used.
In the political view, royal lectures held in the Myeongjong period are important because they were fields to discuss and debate many political issues while political power shifted from Meritorious Elite to Neo-Confucian literati (士林). On idea angle, based on lectures in this period, education for the king shifted to building the king’s morality, becoming the basis for the cultivation theory (修養論). It also became basis for important books written in Joseon after this period, showing the status of lectures in the Myeongjong period.
