Accounting for almost half of the total exports of Korea to southeastern Asian countries in 2018, Vietnam has become the 4th biggest trade partner of Korea. It is of no debate that seaports would play a central role in the national economy especially for export-driven countries such as Vietnam and the investment in the seaport construction may be less productive when there exists an imbalance between the number of goods received and the handling capacity of the port. It is hence critical to take a holistic approach to investigating economic effects of seaport construction in relation to the level of industrial development in the surrounding area. Along this line, this study is aimed at analyzing the economic ripple effects of investing in the seaport construction on other industries in the region. The popular input-output analysis is employed to investigate the economic ripple effects for production, value-added creation, and employment, of which Economic Effects of Seaport Construction Based on Input-Output Analysis: The Case of Vietnam 87 data has been collated from the database provided by the Vietnamese General Statistics Office and Asian Development Bank. The results indicate that an additional investment of 1 million USD in port construction may render 1.85 million USD of production, 0.55 million USD of value-added creation, and 155.5 employments in the related 16 industries. The Vietnamese Government has spent 159.83 million USD to maintain and develop the port system in 2017, from which the Vietnamese national economy has benefited 296.1 million USD of production, 87.6 million USD of value-added creation, and 24.9 thousands of employments. The results of this study may provide a meaningful insight into the Vietnamese seaport construction and operation policy to domestic companies considering investments in Vietnam.
