Purpose: Many countries have made greater investments in port facilities and have treated port development as a vital industry aiming at enhancing seaport operational efficiency and raising their competitiveness.
Research design, data, and methodology: This paper analyzes the operational efficiency of major seaports with Total Factor Productivity indexes, categorizes major seaports on the basis of geographic locations and national GDP tables, and compares China's seaport with seaports around the world. This paper adopts appropriate input and output indicators and correlates the input and output tables of 9 major Chinese seaports and 41 main seaports worldwide.
Results: This research shows that all sampled seaports experienced substantial increases in total output and most of them also saw rising operational efficiency. This research also proves that technological improvements in seaport operation are playing a positive role in enhancing efficiency in Chinese ports.
Conclusions: China's export-oriented economy is growing by leaps and bounds, and in order to forge world-class seaports, seaport managers should ask regional governments for preferential policies, encourage shipping liner companies to co-invest and cooperate with seaport companies so as to develop capabilities to deliver both long-distance and short-distance ocean shipping services.
