A Hungarian writer Imre Kertész dedicated his lifetime to the report of violence and trauma on the basis of the experience he had at the Auschwitz Concentration Camp at the age of fifteen. Belonging to Camp Literature, his representative works are “Fatelessness”, “Fiasco”, “Kaddish for an Unborn Child”, and “Liquidation.” Called the “Tetralogy of Fate”, the four are autobiographical novels that are organically connected with each other in terms of theme.
Especially, “Sorstalanság”, the 2002 Nobel Prize-winner, depicts a man named Köves György who was taken to Auschwitz for the mere reason of being a Jewish man and suffered hardships there for one year. Interestingly enough, the work describes Auschwitz as a place where life does not greatly differ from that outside of the Concentration Camp and even happiness sometimes exists, unlike other Camp Literature works, in reporting the site where the horrors of violence and massacre occur without a pause. This point of view derives from the experience of violence he had at home and school in his childhood and adolescence.
Kertész presents writing as a method to cure the trauma he experienced at Auschwitz. His hero breaks the fragments of his memory into much smaller pieces through writing, unlike others who try to hide their memories of the Concentration Camp intentionally. After all, the writer is freed from the trauma of Auschwitz and cured by burning all the pieces using the burnt offering ritual in his last novel “Felszámolás.”
