Halal is an Arabic word meaning as “permissible” which is generally applicable not only to muslim’s religious life but also daily life as food, clothing and shelter. It is guided by Sharia (Islamic law) consisting of four legal sources as Quran, Sunna, Ijma and Qiyas. Islamic jurists usually consider that Islam distinguishes halal from haram (forbidden) for protecting human being. However, there are some different views among the Islamic juristic schools on halal and haram according to their own interpretation of Sharia. The diversity from different opinions on halal and haram brings us certain issues relating to halal standards. It is important to understand the diversities of halal standards for the people engaging in halal industry and market. Companies in non-Muslim countries, such as Korea, need Halal certification of their products to enter the global halal market. However, the lack of understanding of their halal standards causes unexpected costs in the use of agents for the certification process, resulting in higher production costs. Even with successful Halal certification and entry into the local Islamic market, they will face some difficulties to prove the halalness of their certified product against suspicion of its halalness in the market and lose the market or struggle. This study aims to discuss the diversities of halal standards for improving the awareness of halal industry workers about it.
