The genealogy of the Joseon Dynasty played a social role in releasing solidarity or distinction between certain types of people by means of blood ties. In the 18th century, King Yeongjo and Jeongjo had a great interest in the genealogical books published privately, gaining knowledge of genealogy. They were also deeply interested in identifying networks between officials through genealogy. The two genealogies compiled under the direction of King Jeongjo, Yang Munyanggong Oe’yebo(梁文襄公外裔譜) and Modang Nae’oesonrok(慕堂內外孫錄) can be interpreted as containing political messages. YMO revealed that the officials of Kyujanggak(奎章閣) were descendants of Yang Seongji(梁誠之) who claimed to establish Kyujanggak in the 15th century. MN covered the cognatic descendants of Hong Isang(洪履祥), the famous ancestor of Jeongjo’s mother.
The two genealogies differ in that they recorded the family of scholarly bureaucrats in Kyjanggak and the family of the King’s mother, respectively. However, both genealogies have a common point in that they are not limited to patrilineal lines. Jeongjo did not clarify the political intention of compiling the two genealogies, but the analysis of the listed figures shows that the three political factions, Noron(老論), Soron(少論), and Namin(南人), are mixed to support the Tangpyeong(蕩平) politics of him. The success of these genealogies including various political figures was attributed to the scalability of genealogical editing methods that did not distinguish between men and women.
Despite the fact that the two genealogies cover a variety of political figures, most of the recorded figures did not fall far beyond the prestigious families living in Seoul and the surrounding area. Considering that the King only gained political support within the scope of this ruling class, the compilation of the two genealogies could be interpreted as foretelling the possibility that the political situation of the time could eventually result in the monopoly of power by minority families.
