Significant progress has recently been madeconcerning the engineering of deoxysugar biosynthesis. Thebiosynthetic gene clusters of several deoxysugars from variouspolyketides and aminoglycosides-producing microorganismshave been cloned and studied. This review introduces thebiosynthetic pathways of several deoxysugars and the generationvia the coexpressionof deoxysugar biosynthetic gene casettes and the substrate-flexible glycosyltransferases in a host organism as wel asthe production of TDP-deoxysugar derivatives via one-potenzymatic reactions with the identified enzymes. These recentdevelopments in the engineering of deoxysugars biosynthesismay pave the way to create novel secondary metabolites withpotential biological activities.
