The function of the desVIII gene in the pikromycinproducer Streptomyces venezuelae was characterized by genedeletion and complementation analysis. In addition to theDesVII glycosyltransferase, the desVIII gene that has previouslybeen suggested to be required for the incorporation of endogenousdeoxysugar, TDP-D-desosamine, into the aglycone of pikromycinis also required for the transfer of exogenous deoxysugars,TDP-D-quinovose and TDP-D-olivose.
