A Study on the Dehua kiln in the Ming dynasty Bang Byungsun A Dehua(德化) porcelain in the coastal province of Fujian, had the distinctive local style. It was obviously shown in the 17th century when the legendary potter, He Chaozong(何朝宗), was supposed to make pottery at the kiln workshop and design complicated and delicate models. The porcelain statutes, such as Guanyin, Buddha and Daoist figures, were made as major products and trade items which showed the strong background of religion and local characteristics. Dehua porcelain of Ming and Ching dynasty resembled translucent white marble with a integration of clay and glaze. Low iron content of near 0.2% and high potassium above 5% in clay and glaze made it possible to bring out the high translucent ivory-white. The Dehua porcelain stones, which had special composition of clay, were more suitable for moulding rather than wheel-throwing for making high statute. The step kiln, built in brick, of half-down draft with multi-chamber was devised by the Dehua potters of Ming dynasty. The technical quality of Dehua porcelain was unrivalled in China, although it was never adopted as an imperial ware. And the potters of Dehua kiln succeeded to produce ivory-white religious figures of their own style, through the centuries.
