The royal kiln, as an affiliate of Saongwon(司饔院), exclusively produced white porcelain which was used by the royal family. Around the year 1467, with the building of the royal kiln in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do, the production of the white porcelain for the royal family was incorporated into a state ran handcraft industrial system.
Since the royal kiln was run by the state, the white porcelains were produced with a certain type of production system. One of Jikjang(直長), Bongsa(奉事) and Chambong(參奉), the administrations of Saonwong, were sent to the kiln as Beonjogwan(燔造官). Seori(書吏), Jewon(諸員) and Sagijang(沙器匠) were divided into two teams, Jwabyeon(左邊) and Woobyeon(右邊), to produce the white porcelain. There was a total of 380 Sagijang and half of them provided their labor to make the white porcelain from February to October at the royal kiln once every other year. Beonjogwan presented them to the capital city, when the last baking of the of white porcelain were completed.
The government of Joseon started to change its labour duty system because of many problems in the management of the royal kiln which arose in 1560s. About 127 people served once in one and half year and the period of serving was shorten to six months to prevent Sagijang from leaving. As a result, the white porcelain was dedicated twice a year in the spring and fall.
But the distinction of its production team, Jwabyeon and Woobyeon, was maintained until 1690s regardless of any changes to the labour duty system. But Jwabyeon and Woobyeon inscriptions couldn’t be marked any more on the white porcelain which were produced in the royal kiln during the 18th century and this meant that the production team was not distinguished by Jwabyeon and Woobyeon. This change is highly related to the historical and social situations such as the appearing of Sagijang who were exclusively belonged to the royal kiln and the decrease of government supervision in the management of the royal kiln.
