The objective of this study was to analyze the management methods of Olympiads for physics, chemistry, biology, earth science and astronomy and to make plans to manage the Korean Biology Olympiad(KBO). For this purpose, we conducted an internet survey on the management of Science Olympiads and a questionnaire survey based on the experience of management in 2007. The questionnaire was developed through consultation among four specialists, and was composed of 14 questions in four categories. Based on the results of this study, we proposed management plans as follows. First, an office and fulltime staff should be prepared for the efficient and successful management of the KBO. Second, the range of qualification for participation in the Olympiad should be expanded by reducing the kinds of restricting conditions. Third, the places of test should be extended to the whole country. At least, the test should be held in the Seoul, Daejeon and Busan. Fourth, in the processes of development and selection of test items for KBO, it will be desirable that only those in service at college, university, or institute be involved, and such processes completely be separated between those for middle school and those for high school. Fifth, the questions and test results should not be published in principle. If these proposals are reflected in the Olympiad, they are expected to serve the purpose of the Olympiad and contribute to the expansion of the base of life science among school students and the enhancement of the status of the Korean Society of Biology Education.
