This study was aimed to investigate the inquiry oriented tendency, appropriateness, validity, and utility of science textbook in middle school of revised curriculum in 2007. To achieve this purpose, the study analyzed contents of 9 varieties of middle school 8th grade science textbooks of 7th curriculum and of 17 varieties of middle school 7th grade science textbooks of revised curriculum in 2007 focusing on the photosynthesis unit. To analyze the science textbooks, method for inquiry oriented tendency and appropriateness, validity, and utility was adopted. The data was collected from 92 middle school first and second grade students and 20 secondary school science teachers in Daegu. The results of this study are as follows. First, the index of the most of the science textbooks in contents and figure and diagram items proved to be authoritarian. On the other hand, in question items, the average index of science textbooks mostly appeared to be inquiry oriented. Second, for students and teachers positive responses were higher than negative ones at all items in revised curriculum in 2007 except teaching-learning burden items. From the results above, it is necessary to develop more inquiry-oriented science textbooks and the science textbook, which is directly available in the classroom, This will motivate students more effectively, and reducing teaching-learning burden is needed to be developed.
