Compared with the traditional classroom learning context, learning through a cyber space on the Web will be much more cognitively demanding on the learner's side. In this fact, there should be some mechanism to guide learners that can help them appropriate exploration of information and prevent them from being overwhelmed with too much information. In addition, biology features a hierarchical content structure, which makes the biology content to get fragmented and disconnected when it is presented in a hypertext format on the Web. This makes it difficult for learners to explore and learn this type of information for themselves. In this research we developed three types of web-based learning material with the classification topic in high school biology. In terms of how much control learners can have and what kind of guiding structure the site has within the learning materials, the three types of web based learning materials are classified as (1) Whole menu type (2) Subsequential menu type (3) Sequential textbook type. Then high school students'(N=213) preference among these learning materials was surveyed. Data from the survey revealed that most of students(82.5%) experienced losing their way on the web site. Furthermore students(82.3%) thought Whole menu type over the others in that this type enabled them to figure out interrelationships between topics and to find out wanted information easily without a teacher's help.
