The purpose of this study was to comparatively analyze the difference of brain waves between hearing-impaired university students (HI) and non-disabled university students (ND), which were measured during the biological classification and hypothesis-generation. The EEG data were recorded (30 channels) from 13 HI and 13 ND studying at the same university. During the classification, HI searched more criteria for classifying and showed higher variation of the relative power of the beta (13.0∼29.9 Hz) band in the prefrontal, frontal, temporal and occipital lobe. And ND showed higher variation of the relative power of the theta (4.0∼7.9 Hz) band in the prefrontal and frontal lobe. During the hypothesis-generation, ND generated more hypotheses and showed higher variation of the relative power of the theta band in the frontal, parietal and temporal lobe and higher variation of the relative power of the gamma (30.0∼50.0 Hz) band in the parietal and occipital lobe. The results supported the notion that HI has a better classification ability and ND has a better hypothesis-generation ability. In addition, HI pays more attention and ND thinks more deeply during the classification. ND thinks more creatively and scientifically during the hypothesis- generation. This study also discussed implications of these findings for education of hearing-impaired students.
