The purpose of this paper is to analyze the authenticity of Korean intermediate textbooks focusing on vocabulary and phrase using WordSmith tools. The authenticity of dialogues in the textbook help learners communicate successfully in real-life situations. Nevertheless, it is hard to find the empirical studies on the validity of the vocabulary and phrase in the textbook. For this study, we compiled 17 Korean intermediate textbooks used in five major Korean language institutes. We observed the frequency of token and type of words found in the textbooks compared with Sejong spoken corpus. WordSmith tools offers key words function to select the significant lexical items from textbooks that are noteworthy in a statistical sense. This study shows how a key words and key clusters analysis offers the differences between textbooks and the spoken corpus in terms of descriptive, technical and quantitative perspectives.
