This paper discuses the translators’ trace in the target texts under the name of translators’ visibility focused on the explicitation and explicitation translation strategies in Korea Unmasked: In Search of the Country, the society and the people. The analysed text is selected as metatext for study to the target culture readers who want to acquire the source cultural information or knowledge such as its history, geography, society, and others. The launching points of this paper are two hypothesis: before translating this kind of metatexts, translators would fix the goal of translation in mind and attempt to deliver author(s)’ intentions faithfully to the target readers; the awareness of the fixed purpose of translation requires the translators’ active involvement or interruption in the whole process of translation. This paper shows that translators have played the role of faithful intermediators which is embodied in the form of the translation strategies concretely like explicitation and implicitation. And also it offers that translators apply their strategies consistently to deciding whether relative information will be added or not in the target text to fill the gap of background knowledge between source and target text readers. The degree of translators visibility is not necessarily related to the explicitation and implicitation strategies. One of the little but significant results for this research is to prove the reliability and validity of explicitation hypothesis by Blur-Kulka that the explicitation and implicitation translation strategies are inseparably related to each other, but the tendency of the former has higher frequency than the latter in the text. Therefore, this hypothesis can support the argument firmly that target texts are always longer than source texts regardless of their language, genre, and register.
