Shin Heum is a representative writer who worked in the middle of Joseon Dynasty. As for Shin Heum, there is previous research regarding the acceptance of Ming Dynasty literature, the interest on Qin‒Han ancient literature(秦漢古文), and the acceptance of 『Chuang tzu』. There are several writings in Shin Heum’s vast works that continuously reveal his thoughts through his appreciation of paintings. This study focuses on the study of the acceptance of 『Chuang tzu』 in the literature, and paid attention to the text that Shin Heum wrote about painting.
In this paper, the records related to the artistic sensibility of Shin Heum and his family, relationships with artists, and Art of history examined. In his writing about paintings, Shin Heum also borrows or uses the sentences of 『Chuang tzu』.
Shin Heum divided sacred works(神品), exquisite works(絶品), and mysterious works(妙品) as Hwapumnon(畫品論) and mentioned a spiritual transcendence of freedom in order to reach a sacred works as Haeuibanbak(解衣磐礡). He also emphasized the spirit of art that transcends limitations and obtains absolute freedom by explaining an example of fable appearing in 『Chuang tzu』 He used the sentences of 『Chuang tzu』 in his appreciation of paintings, and he repeatedly described thoughts of Phisibangsaeng(彼是方生) or Hojeopmong(胡蝶夢). Shin Heum continued his painting appreciation from a different perspective than the Neo‒Confucianistic discipline or Unworldliness(脫俗) and Seclusion(隱逸) of the contemporary literators.
That Shin Heum looks at paintings as a transcendental space, and explains experienced thoughts by borrowing 『Chuang tzu』 is the personality of his viewpoints on paintings.
