This study investigates an art appreciation approach to develop self-directed art learning competence. Following previous research on an instructional approach for art expression lessons to improve one of the key competences, self-directed art learning competence, proposed by the 2015 revised art curriculum. Based on the humanistic value of art education, this research takes a broad view of an alternative art appreciation approach. As a part of the public education programs, art appreciation aiming to develop of self-directed ness and humanistic value investigation needs to be differentiated from a currently prevailed art appreciation approach which is focusing on the formal analysis of artworks. In order to discuss an alternative approach, this paper, as an example, introduces Feldman"s approach that is suggested from a humanistic viewpoint. Then, this research analyzes his approach to figure out the alternative idea utilizing humanistic value of art education to develop students" self-directed art appreciation. The main point of this research, however, is speculative and theoretical. Further research for the practical application of this general level idea is needed.
