De Modo Studendi, a brief letter of Thomas Aquinas, shows some concerns of scholarship of the contemporary scholastics. This exhortation to his young disciple is based on opinions of how Thomas thinks of scholarship. What Thomas called a way of study is in fact a way of theology-studying. For the theology-study Thomas firstly understand theology to be a scholarship. And then he tried to suggest a method that is appropriate with the property of scholarship. As a result, theology, a way of scholarship in Thomas’ understanding, has some features as follows: firstly, it has a proposition of the principle of faith. Secondly, it has a concept to integrate contents of faith all. Finally, it contains discourses of praxis. Thus, through demonstration of reason the theology is to be understood and systematized.
Therefore someone firstly should accept it systemically accordng to the development of reason, in order to learn theology, try to grasp its major principles, and should understand that theology targets forward humane behaviors. To accomplish all these processes, Thomas exhort that someone should study from the easier to the more difficult, practise what he/she learnt, and focus on principles and inner factors more than external ones (in terms of contents and authority).
