The collapse of communist countries has taken the world by storm. Postcommunist theology or post-socialist theology has emerged to answer the challenges of post-communist societies. In the soon-to-be reunified Korea, Korean Christians will need to construct a theology for a post-North Korean society, a counterpart of the post-communist theology.
This article aims to survey post-communist theologies and share their research to extrapolate the future of the church and theology in the post-North Korean society. In this sense, this article is a theoretical study of selective historical developments of post-communist theologies and at the same time a practical study seeking ways to make the most of the previous research.
This article classifies post-communist theologies into three groups: the past model dealing with the settlement of past history, the present model tackling social conflict, and the future model presenting a vision. As regards the past model, it found that the post-communist theology largely failed to solve the problem of the settlement of past history, by examining two topics of the government-patronized church and the emergence of diakonia theology under the communist rule. Regarding the present model, it illustrated that as an important post-communist theology, Miroslav Volf presents a political theology emphasizing the importance of public-ness, and that to enhance theological relevancy, his theology has two characteristics such as existential theology and strategical theology, the latter of which includes participatory theology, theology of the penultimate, and creative theology. In regard to the future model, post-communist theologies made strenuous efforts to answer diverse challenges: constructing unique and authentic theologies, facing social problems like the risky relationship between democracy and capitalism, presenting a vision for ideal life, and empowering the church to contribute to the development of society in various capacities. Therefore, the theology in a post-North Korean society needs to maximize the research of the post-communist theology to prepare the church and theology for a reunified Korea.
