In spite of their significant differences in writing style and artistic and social attitude Yi Mun-yol"s “Days of Youth” and Yi In-seong"s “Into an Estranged Time” can be both regarded as the pioneering and the most successful works of Bildungsroman in the modern Korean literature insofar as the struggle of a young man of artistic and literary interests with the world and his endeavour to find his own self stand at the center of both novels. This article carries out a thorough comparative analysis of these two representative Korean Bildungsromans and examines the question why this old european genre get an actual meaning in the literary and social context of the Korean 1980s and what differences they show in concretizing the generic schema.
In 1970s and 80s when the South Korean society was defined by rapid industrialization and oppressive anti-communist dictatorship and the free development of an individual was severely endangered, the key question of the genre about a young man’s finding and building his own independent self identity seemed to the young generation more than of literary concerns, especially to the college students with liberal minds and artistic sensitivities. It means that the Korean Bildungsroman of 1980s can be understood as a literary reaction to the social reality which made the question of the defence of self-identity an urgent issue.
Though confronted with the same problems, the two writers let their heroes take different paths of self-realization. While Yi Mun-yol depoliticize the art and literature and tries to harmonize the youthful yearnings of his literary ambitious and rebellious hero Young-hun with the conformist middle-class life of his later self, Yi In-seong’s nameless hero sees the only way of self-realization in an endless negation of everything established and settled and denies to become any identifiable self. These two contrary attitudes of the novelists are reflected in their respective narrative styles. Yi Mun-yol narrates more realistically and from the perspective of the hero’s ‘mature’ self, while Yi In-seong carries the avant-garde writing style which tends to the destruction of narrative coherence to its extreme.
