We do not hesitate to say that we live in a global era. The discourse of the past national ideology and education transformed due to motilities, migration, international marriages, refugees and foreign workers. In some cases, it replaces and loosen the strong bound of cultural communities under the ethnic community. But there are still type of children in the classroom, who consider themselves strangers. This paper is intended to analyze classrooms as a place where different cultures meet and compete and examine the reality of multi-cultural education in Korea and Japan through classrooms. Through the teachers` narratives about education and classrooms where various cultures meet and negotiate, I looked into the past, present and future of multi-cultural education.
Multi-cultural education in Korea has made dynamic changes in curriculum and policy since 2006, but the change in school and teachers is slow. This is because teachers who were trained before the change are practicing their education in the classroom and the previous school culture is still strongly remained. In Japan, a variety of education programs are practiced by those who felt a strong need for the education, so called, grass roots regardless of the state. However, it is confirmed that the powerful forces coming down from above affect the school these days and its direction and practice are faltering. Both Korea and Japan are seem to be attempting a transformative approach level of education. However, it is time for us to make critical judgments and reflections whether or not the multi-cultural perspective will move forward in a direction that can be socially active.
