Pokémon Go game is one of the most downloaded games, popular among gamers all over the world. Since the introduction of the Pokémon Go game in July 2016 until January 2017, people in South Korea could not play it anywhere in Korea except the Sokcho area. During this period, tourists would visit Sokcho chiefly to play Pokémon Go. This study investigates the intention of Pokémon Go players to visit Sokcho, South Korea. It extends the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology 2 (UTAUT2) model to a visit-intention perspective by adding two constructs (i.e., self-congruity and visit intention). Data was collected from 367 students at a university in South Korea, and the extended model tested using a structural equation modeling approach. The empirical results show that habit, performance expectancy, hedonic motivation, price value and effort expectancy were all positively associated with behavioral intention, whereas social influence and facilitating conditions had insignificant relationships with behavioral intention. Behavioral intention was also positively associated with use behavior, self-congruity and visit intention, while use behavior and self-congruity were positively associated with visit intention. This study shows destination’s technological facilities may also attract tourists and tourism destination promoters may consider this implication that highlights this new trend.
